On Sept 2023, Sambalpur Consumer Court imposed a hefty penalty of Rs 25,000 on a Xerox shop owner for refusing to refund Rs 3 to a customer. A customer went to a Xerox shop and paid a total of Rs 5, and the price of a Xerox was Rs 2 each; the shopkeeper did not return Rs 3 to the customer. The customer was repeatedly asking for Rs 3, but the Xerox shopkeeper started misbehaving and returned the money, saying, “I have donated the money to the beggar.”
The complainant, Prafulla Kurar Dash, is a journalist who resides in the Budharaja area of Sambalpur district.
The shopkeeper did not give any receipt or bill to the customer, which is an unfair trade practice. “This can result in significant mental anguish, harassment, inconvenience, and financial losses. ”
