New Delhi: The inquiry into the horrible collision involving three trains that occurred on Friday in Balasore, Odisha, and resulted in the deaths of 278 people was handed over to the Central Bureau of Inquiry (CBI) today. This morning, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived at the accident scene and filed a complaint under several different provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
As a result of the railway disaster, the police in Odisha have opened an investigation into “causing death by negligence and endangering life” as the charges.
The involvement of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is a significant development since officials believe that only a comprehensive investigation conducted by a leading agency can establish whether or not there was criminal manipulation with the point machine or the electronic interlocking system or whether or not the train changed tracks due to reconfiguration or a signalling malfunction.
According to government sources, all possibilities will be considered, including mechanical mistake, human error, and sabotage.
Railway officials had previously claimed that the accident involving the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a cargo train was caused by probable “sabotage” and interference with the interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains. All three trains were involved in the accident.
The collision, which involved two passenger trains and a goods train, resulted in the deaths of 278 individuals and injuries to over 800 more.
According to the first findings of the inquiry conducted by the railways, the accident occurred as a result of an issue with the signals, and there was no collision.
However, a number of authorities in the field of railway travel have cast doubt on whether or not the Coromandel Express was responsible for the collision with the freight train that occurred directly within a ‘loop line.’
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that anybody found guilty will face the harshest punishment.
A “loop line” is a section of a railway that branches off from the main lines and then loops back around to the mainline after a certain distance. This configuration is used to manage heavy rail traffic more efficiently.
Following what appears to be a head-on collision, the engine of the Coromandel Express is seen sitting atop the freight train in the visuals.
The CBI investigation will focus on addressing all questions about the accident, which was the worst in the country in the recent two decades. According to government sources, all possibilities will be considered, including mechanical mistakes, human error, and sabotage.
