When we can’t find our way and the GPS isn’t much help, we often have to resort to asking random people on the street for directions. In one neighbourhood of Lucknow, India, it is customary to exchange money for an address if you knock on a stranger’s door and ask for directions.
People in the Bibiganj neighbourhood of Saadatganj in Lucknow charge Rs 50 to individuals who inquire about the whereabouts of a well-known Pandit named Budhram (Pandit Budhram bibiganj lucknow). People travel from all over the country to consult with him in the hopes of finding answers to their difficulties. People in need of help come to us with issues as varied as financial hardship, infidelity, in-law harassment, a lack of academic motivation, and career guidance. It has been said that he can provide a remedy for a little Rs 200.
Although the Pandit’s fame has spread far and wide, he has not posted a sign with his address. So, they get lost and have to ask for directions. The locals have had enough with this for several years now. They have a sign posted outside their homes that says anyone interested in learning Pandit’s whereabouts and when he may be reached must first pay Rs 50.
A local resident named Kamla, aged 70, shared that her house is situated just across from the Pandit’s residence. As a result, approximately 80% of individuals seeking directions to Pandit Budhram’s home mistakenly knock on her door. The constant interruptions have become a nuisance for Kamla, prompting her to put up a sign requesting a fee of Rs. 50 from anyone seeking directions, like everyone else. Her hope is that this tactic will deter individuals from bothering her unnecessarily.
